Beginning Instruction
Finding Stillness: Introduction to Zazen Meditation
Welcome to the Toledo Buddhist Temple. We're delighted you're interested in learning zazen, the heart of Zen Buddhist practice. Zazen, or seated meditation, is a path to cultivating mindfulness, inner peace, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
What is Zazen?
Zazen is more than just sitting quietly. It's a practice of observing the mind, letting go of distractions, and returning to the present moment.
Through zazen, we learn to see the nature of our thoughts and emotions without judgment, fostering clarity and equanimity.
Getting Started
We understand that beginning a meditation practice can feel daunting. That's why we've created this resource to guide you.
In this video, Roshi Rinsen offers clear and compassionate instruction on the fundamentals of zazen.

Key Points from Roshi Rinsen's Video
Posture: Learn the proper seated posture, including the use of a zafu cushion and the alignment of your spine.
Breath: Discover how to focus on your breath as an anchor for your attention.
Mindfulness: Understand how to observe your thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them.
Dealing with Distractions: Learn techniques for gently returning your focus when your mind wanders.
Tips for Your Practice
Consistency: Even a short daily practice is more beneficial than infrequent long sessions.
Finding a Quiet Space: Create a peaceful environment where you can meditate undisturbed.
Patience: Zazen is a gradual process. Be kind to yourself and don't expect immediate results.
